6 Months Old Tomorrow!

November 29th, 2007

Friday is Katya’s 1/2 birthday! To celebrate we are doing exactly half of nothing, but I still think it is exciting.

Also, I forgot to write yesterday that Katya is 27 inches long. She’s 90th percentile for height, 80th for weight. It certainly isn’t a race or contest, but it shows that everything is going OK. I don’t see any reason to rush solids when she is growing so well on nothing but breastmilk. The La Leche League says she should be able to sit up unassisted and have a pincher grasp before getting food, and that sounds fine to me.

Baby’s First Solids!

November 28th, 2007

I already told you that Katya has been drinking bathwater. Well, now, I have the exciting news that as of the 26th she has had her first solid food. And it was……the Archie McFee catalog! I wasn’t sure what that bizarre looking thing in her poop was, but when Bill said it looked like paper, I figured it out. I think this is the sort of thing that I’m not supposed to admit. We are waiting on a variety of factors for official introduction of solids. And watching her carefully when she plays with the mail.

Speaking of her interest in water, here you can see Katya asking, “How was I supposed to know that would happen if I grabbed your water bottle?” It’s hard to be a baby. There’s actually a lot more water on her than you can see in this photo.

Katya had her first ride in the stroller a week or 2 ago.

We’ve had some very noticeable growth in the last few weeks.  This morning Katya weighed in at 17 lbs, 1/2 oz. I totally thought she was going to be 18 lbs. She is 100% out of the small size cloth diapers, which is rather exciting since we had an excuse to buy a few cute new baby things. Speaking of which, we quit nighttime disposibles cold turkey 3 or 4 days ago. It’s been a little comical as I stuff way too much bulky stuff into night diapers while we wait for the slim inserts to arrive.

Katya had her first immunization today, which she barely noticed. Probably partially because she had her first drugs too, baby Tylenol.

Katya also has discovered that she can make this really dreadful screeching noise. I trust that she will pass through this phase quickly. Until then it is slightly more bearable when she is wearing ridiculous hats. I also like the coping strategy where I give her to Bill and leave the room. Or sleep, nursing and sleep are nice times too. At least her motor skills are improving so she is having fewer toy-induced meltdowns.

We Have Teeth!!!!! (subtitled, What IS That Thing in My Mouth?)

November 14th, 2007

This morning I saw the tips of the front bottom two teeth poking through Katya’s gums! Without screaming or big fever or anything. Thank goodness. She just keeps rubbing her tongue over them with a perplexed look on her face.

8 Things You Should Know About Me by Katya Sophia

November 13th, 2007

1. Junk mail gets me high.

2. My feet are so wonderful. Every time I put them in my mouth, I ask myself, “Why don’t I do this more often?”

3. I know how to poop and pee in the potty. I actually just got big enough to sit on the potty with someone holding me steady. Hey, why are you watching me potty? Just because I don’t mind talking about it, doesn’t mean I want you to watch. katya-5-mos-2-wks-sm014.jpg

4. I think the shirt says it all. Oh, and also,

5. sitting in the Bumbo seat almost always makes me barf.

6. I like to stand up.

7. I like to type. Sometimes I send my daddy email when he is at work.

8. If you get the camera too close to my head I will try to eat it.

Lady Kenmore

November 7th, 2007

Well, it’s a sad day today. The last of the childhood pets is gone. Lady Kenmore,  adopted a few weeks before my bat mitzvah, died this morning after having renal failure for many years. She was 19 1/2. We’re happy that she was at home in bed with Mom, knowing she was safe and loved. Fortunately she started to clearly move into a transition last night so I got to come over and say goodbye.

Lady Kenmore was named after the Sears product line because even as a teeny tiny kitten she purred as loud as a major appliance. She was a pretty aloof cat, a cat’s cat, until the last few years when she started snuggling with Mom a lot. She was a champion hunter who brought me more than one lizard when I came home to visit from college. Mom started giving her wet food hoping she would stop disemboweling baby bunnies. When we get her cremated remains back we are going to scatter them down the side of the hill where she loved to hunt and wander.

Lady K had a tumor in her jaw years ago, weirdly in the same place that Mom had one later. We had part of K’s jaw removed twice to deal with it. Over time her remaining jaw migrated over so that her tongue lolled permanently out. In her old age she also had these beautiful grey stripes pop out on her tail. When she was young they were black on black and barely noticeable.

I’m frustrated that I can’t find better pictures of K or Bill dressed as K from Halloween 2 years ago. Katya just started to really notice and pet her but I never had the camera over there. Here is a cell phone picture of Kenmore dressed as a vampire kitty a few Halloweens ago :

5 months

November 1st, 2007

Hello hello! It has been a while. Since I last posted Katya has become obsessed with putting everything in her mouth. She even sort of lunged at the cat with her mouth open today. She drank her first water out of the tub, out of a washcloth. Not something I planned on but it seems ok. We don’t use soap until right before she gets out.

Oh yes, as I was saying:

Check out that string of drool! She was in a toy licking FRENZY! (Plus those are leg warmers I made out of women’s socks! I love them!)

Our little girl, totally unclear on the concept of Halloween. We took her out for a walk up the hill in Nellie Gail. Many, many teenage girls were beside themselves over how cute she was. Katya just kind of took it all in. We saw a couple of cool homemade costumes, a girl dressed as a Rubik’s Cube and a boy dressed as an iphone. Our little 2 year old neighbor had a hilarious and yet somewhat alarming costume that made it look like she was riding a horse. I ate bat-shaped pretzels. It was a good night.

Oh yes, and reading is becoming a slightly different activity, involving many more body parts than previously. Aside from the whole book-kissing thing Katya is starting to get interested in whacking at touch and feel books. Katya’s favorites right now include Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, The Foot Book by Dr. Seuss, The Nose Book, lots of books of songs (like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star), A Boy and His Bunny, Who Sees You in the Ocean (pop-up), Brown Bear Brown Bear, That’s Not My Teddy, Pat the Bunny, and Hush, Little Alien by Daniel Kirk.

Bill has this whole hilarious routine around changing Katya into her nightgown. Here he is telling her she is a “sack baby” and lamenting her lack of arms. She loves it.

Other daddy activities she merely tolerates. No, really, I think she generally enjoys helping out with things. I’m SO happy she isn’t scared of big appliance noises.

For all you diehard Katya fans who are still reading this, here are some pictures that are nothing but my baby in cute outfits. I seem to be very into baby dressing this month.

This hat is a little too big and falls over her eyes. She doesn’t really react to suddenly only seeing yellow terry, oddly enough.

I know, I know, it’s a “boy” outfit, but come on, there are rollerskating teddy bears! And one is wearing a backpack! And it only cost 50 cents! (That’s true of all these outfits, actually, except the costume, which is how we came to have a silly amount of baby clothes.) For those of you who get concerned about such things, I promise, there are dresses and girly pink things in the mix too.

In other news, Katya just started to be able to sleep in the big bed by herself for naps. She still wakes more often than if she was with one of us, but it’s pretty excitingly freeing since I always inadvertantly woke her up putting her in the bassinet. Now we just need to figure out how to keep her from rolling out. I suspect the bed is moving into a corner this weekend.

Last week Katya weighed in at 15 lbs 4 oz in a sundress. This week she was 16 lbs 2 oz in that Very Hungry Caterpillar outfit and a pretty wet diaper. I’m sure it was a heavier outfit but it seems like she’s still gaining steadily too.

Hmmmm. What else? Katya likes to grab our faces a lot these days. She will nurse on my nose if I let her. If I pretend to eat her hand she thinks it is hilarious. Katya also seems to be feeling a lot of patterns on our clothes to see if they are flat or not.
