The Fair
We ended up going to the Orange County Fair 5 times. We really miss it. We thought we were leaving for the last time after trip #3, and then as we drove to the freeway, Katya sadly announced that she had wanted a dolphin balloon. We could have gotten Michelle to pick one up, but we decided to go back the next day. As we walked to the front gate, Katya said, “Whee whee whee whee whee!” Then one of the first things we saw were playground cars for climbing on. Katya started clambering on and off saying “I’m at the fair!” over and over to herself. When we left, we picked up the dolphin. I asked Katya if she wanted to name it.
K: “Count my blessings?”
A: “Ok, what is something that makes you feel happy, Katya?”
K: “My Dolphin Happy.”
A: “You want to name your dolphin Happy?”
K: “Yes!”
Needless to say, we have been singing, “If You’re Happy and You Know It, Clap Your Flippers.” This song has already been a BIG FAVORITE around here. We have the long book version by Jane Cabrera. On receipt of Bert and Ernie hairclips from Megan, Katya also created the “If You’re Happy and You Know It, Clap Bert and Ernie” variation.
My baby, who wants to go down most 3 foot high slides in my lap, insisted on going on this slide, which is at least 3 STORIES tall. She was only tall enough if her hair was fluffed up. The operator said Katya could go if she could walk all the way up. Afterwards I asked her if she was scared, and she said yes. Why? “It sounds like a tiger.” It wasn’t the height, it was the generator! A few days later Katya walked straight over to the top of the tall big kid slide at the dinosaur park and slid down by herself with no hesitation.
It’s been 2 weeks now and Katya is still asking to go on rides. We’ve done some fun pretending, but sometimes, it’s just not enough. We went to the petting zoo, which has both animals, and a little train. Big hit! Tonight we will go to the Spectrum for the carousel, and to see if K is big enough to go on the Ferris wheel. We have yet to find a bee ride substitute, alas.

Antlers on reindeer and kitties in windows
Chocolate chip cookies and pieces of mango
Elevators, escalators, carousels and swings
These are a few of my favorite things
All kinds of treasures I find on the ground
My dog jingling and snorting as he rolls around
Small furry creatures who peek out of holes
These are some things that I love the most
Nice monsters hiding and pop-up books popping
Elephants painting and dinosaurs pooping
Crickets who sit in the moonlight and sing
These are a few of my favorite things
When I fall down
When I can’t sleep
When I’m feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don’t feel so bad
This was Katya’s *official* 2nd birthday gift. She LOVES it and can sing the first verse almost all by herself. I have such a long list of other favorite things somewhere that I may add another one at some point. It seems wrong that there isn’t a *real* horse favorite thing.
